The exhibition of the Textile Printing Centre in Česká Lípa is located in the vicinity of the Lipý Water Castle. It offers not only an introduction to valuable historical artefacts, but also the opportunity to actively participate in the creative process of textile printing. The historical exposition presents the heritage of cartouches in the Českolipsko region. The main exhibit are restored swatches, which are supplemented by printing forms.
The history of textile production and processing in Česká Lípa dates back to the Middle Ages, specifically to 1382, when a guild of weavers is documented here. The textile industry reached its peak at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Českolipsko became one of the important industrial centres at that time, especially thanks to the establishment of manufactories for printing fabrics called cartouches (e.g. Richter's and Wedrich's). By 1837, a total of 60 new cartouches were added in the Austrian Empire, of which a full 1/3 were in Českolipsko. Česká Lípa thus became the second largest centre of textile printing after Prague and reached its peak. In the second half of the 19th century, interest in the fabrics of Česká Lípa ceased and the cardmaking industry gradually declined. The last cartouche in Česká Lípa (Rosenthal's) ceased to operate in 1938.
The interactive exhibition introduces current textile printing techniques in a playful way. Visitors can try out different forms of fabric printing using screen printing or historical forms. For the little ones there is a simple printing with stamps. The exhibition also includes a video projection presenting digitized printing patterns and 3D visualization of the historical appearance of the Lipý Water Castle.
The space is currently used for workshops, cultural events, lectures and exhibitions.
