1557
A royal castle was probably built on the site of an older hill fort around the middle of the 13th century, protecting the old trade route north to Lusatia. The castle itself consisted of a square tower with an attached palace building. There were no moats in the castle area, the steep slopes provided sufficient protection. The lower forecourt was made of wood. A path led from the castle wall to the second gate to the upper bailey, which was already made of stone. The third gate led to the upper castle, which was protected by bastions.
