The town of Osečná is situated on the southern side of the Ještěd Mountains and on the edge of the Ralská Hills, at an altitude of 379 m above sea level. Osečná was probably founded by one of the Vartenbergs in the first half of the 13th century on the provincial trade route between Český Dub and Děvín Castle. In 1565, the Church of St. Vitus was built here, which houses the family tomb of the Bieberstein and Schleinitz families. In 1576, Rudolf II made Osečná a town on the intercession of the free lord von Oppersdorf.

The connection with the town is provided by buses, the nearest railway station is about 8 km away, in the village of Křížany. The town of Osečná also includes the spa towns of Kundratice, Druzcov, Kotel, Zábrdí and Chrastná. Kundratice Spa is one of the oldest spas in Bohemia, where peat is used as a natural healing resource.

The town of Osečná is situated in a picturesque landscape. In addition to forests, meadows and pastures there are Jenišovský, Mlékárenský, Kočvarův, Lázeňský and Chrastenský ponds. The Ploučnice River flows through the town and rises north of the town at the Jenišovský Pond. The Druzcovský brook flows through Druzcov and the Zábrdka river through Zábrdí. The whole surrounding region is literally interwoven with a dense network of cycling and hiking trails.
